Study #3: "The Relationship of Masculinity and Femininity to the Big Five Personality Dimensions Among a Chinese Sample"
The information portrayed in this study about the difference between masculine and feminine personalities in China was very informative. The study used information gathered from an internet survey combined with The Big Five model of personality analysis and the Bem Sex Role Inventory to draw conclusions about masculine and feminine characteristics specific to the Chinese (Lijun & Yong 2011). This study examines the characteristics in both heterosexual and homosexual participants (Lijun & Yong). Since this website is focused on using the Big Five to examine personality aspects of women, or femininity, this aspect was applicable to the overall theme. Researchers found that participants higher in masculinity rated higher in categories of extroversion, conscientiousness and intellect, and not as strong in terms of agreeableness (Lijun & Yong). Oppositely, participants high in femininity rated highly on the agreeableness characteristic (Lijun & Yong). Also, femininity did not correlate as positively with the other four aspects of the Big Five, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and neurotisicm. It is very interesting to note the effects cultural influences have on aspects of personality, across sexual preferences. This study points out that research has been conducted before that was similar to this, but not in cultures that promoted collectivist beliefs, like China, which made the results different from studies in Western Countries (Lijun & Yong). Overall, this study was interesting because it shows how the Big Five Personality model can determine various personality traits that can help define human behavior better in various cultural aspects.
